- Tips to Protect Your Art Collection Any lover and collector of art will do his or her utmost to protect their art collection. Artwork is not only a major investment these days, it is also an essential part of the fabric of any home. It is rare to find a home with no prints, sketches or paintings on the wall, not to mention sculptures figurines or art glass adorning mantelpieces and sideboards. It is vital that collectors take proper care of their artwork to make sure that no piece is degraded in any way, shape or form. There are a number of ways that you can keep your artwork in perfect condition, but careful planning is required from the start. Put a strategy in place to protect your artwork before you even bring it home from the gallery or fair. Think about where you will place or hang the artwork to avoid any hazards that may turn into situations that leave the art damaged. For example, if a glass window does not protect the shelf on which a piece is to be placed, it may be wise to purchase a case in which to put it before it is actually placed on the shelf. The majority of measures that you should take concerning the placing of your artwork are common sense really. For example, you should not place any art in the kitchen or above a fireplace because the heat, steam and fumes can cause untold damage. You should also avoid smoking in the vicinity of your artwork because this is liable to cause irreversible staining. Similarly, placing art in direct sunlight can cause it to fade, and this would instantly be noticeable to the untrained eye as well as other collectors. If you have pets or young children then artwork should always be kept out of their reach so that no accidental damage occurs. The placement of artwork, as you can see above, can be extremely hazardous so it does require serious thought. It may be necessary to try a piece out in a few places during the first day that you own it so you can make an on the spot assessment of where its permanent home should be.When you do buy the art in question then you should always ask the attendant that oversees your transaction whether or not any special measures need to be taken in order to preserve its condition. Some galleries actually hand out care leaflets when a sale goes through, whilst others may have extremely knowledgeable staff that can give you hints and tips that they have picked up over the years. There are also various publications that you can purchase to give you a good grounding in the care of artwork. You should read at least one of these if you are an art collection beginner. The final thing that is essential in the preservation of you artwork is actually the cleaning regime that you have. It goes without saying that you should avoid using furniture polish and other similar oily substances in the vicinity of your artwork because that can cause irreparable harm. However, it is essential that a certain level of care be administered to regularly maintain it. For example, all sketches, paintings and prints should be framed wherever possible, and all sculptures and models should be encased in a protective cover. Although advice is usually specific to the nature of the piece and the materials present in its composition, it is fairly safe to pass a dry and clean cloth over all artwork from time to time to remove any dust build-ups. Dust can be just as harmful to art as any chemical, so it is essential that it is removed. The golden rule of caring for your artwork is to always ask for help whenever you are unsure. Always think carefully about what you are doing and do not take the art for granted. One moment of foolishness can work out to be extremely expensive!

- History of Murano Glass Murano, Italy has been the longest lasting center for glass making in history. It has been a popular location for the art since the 9th century. The craft has gone through a variety of changes and has some of the most creative and elegant artwork and the region has survived its successes and failures and despite everything it has found the ability to bounce back amid adversity.Murano is situated as a small island in the North West of Venice, Italy. The history of glassmaking in the region goes back to 800 AD in Rome, along with a mixture of influences from Asia and the religion of Islam. As Venice was a major port, trading of multicolored beads with African, Asian and Islamic neighbors became a mainstay of the region.According to historical records, Murano became a center for glassmaking after frequent fires in Venice forced authorities to move its factories to the Island of Murano in 1291. Consequently, the Murano style is often interwoven that of the Venetians.Murano held a monopoly on the craft for centuries and craftsmen on the island developed and improved several technologies like crystalline, aventurine which has threads of gold, lattimo - milk glass, smalto - containing enamel, millefiori - containing multicolors, and artificial gemstones. Even today, craftmen in the industry are said to follow these same techniques. However, now Murano has given way to a wide range of glass art including contemporary, jewelry, as well as chandeliers. The art of Murano glass is rather complex and normally uses a technique known as lampworking. Silica, which turns into liquid form at high temperatures, is used to make glass. While the glass cools from the liquid to a solid phase, the artisan is able to manipulate it to make it into a desired shape or form.Murano glass, over the centuries, has faced its moments of praise as well as decline. Nonetheless, region's glassmakers also strive toward quality and perfection. The glass art from the region is especially well known for its esthetics, which has set it apart from its competition. And no other region has been able to reproduce the esthetic superiority of Murano glassware. Throughout the history of glassmaking, the hollow blown glass technique from the region has made its stamp on the art of fine glassware. Clearly, the hallmark of Murano glass lies in its variations. A variety of glassware including multi-colored glazing and others that are light and transparent all represent the history of Murano glass art.Murano art glassware is also part of the European Glass collection at many galleries. This collection includes mouth-blown cranes and flamingos that are often large in size. The art of producing Murano glass vases has been popular for the craftsmanship that stems from the glass-blowing method. Murano glass art can include a variety of fish, birds and ducks. These small animal collections or figurines are made utilizing the glass blowing technique from Murano.
- Collectible Glassware from Romania Romanian Mouth-Blown Glassware Makes Its Way Into Mainstream ArtBy Cornel PlescanThe art of glass making holds a special relevance in Eastern Europe and particularly in Romania. What is quite extraordinary about Romanian glass manufacturing is that it combines traditional themes from Rome and Constantinople, lending vivacious color and ethnic design to the glasswork. Eastern Europe has lots of fine sand, which allows glassmaking to flourish in the region and Romania in particular is well known for its exquisite art glass pieces.Glass making in Eastern Europe and Romania emanates from the Murano style in Italy as most of the artisans studied glassmaking there. Up to the 13 century, European glassmaking was exclusive to Venice. But frequent fires prompted Venetian authorities to shift the furnaces to the island of Murano. There has been a long history of making glass in Romania. Romanian glassmakers have successfully passed on this art for several generations and the craft continues to thrive in this part of Eastern Europe. In Romania, it is said that artisan's only pass on the secrets of glass making to members of their family. More importantly, there is a rigid hierarchy in obtaining the coveted position as a glass blower. For example, a young man may take years before he can get to that stage within this strict hierarchy.Romanian glass is comparable to any great piece of Eastern European mouth blown glass. And they are nothing like the ones that are made by machinery or inexpensive duplicates. Traditionally Romanian factories and glass studios manufacture clear glass utilizing pellets that are distinct and commonly found in Western Europe. And depending on the artisan, German pigments are popularly used for coloring or painting glass. The combination of this blend makes Romanian crafted glass truly a superior product anywhere in Europe. Though Romanian glasswork is normally not made from crystal, nonetheless, it carries a similar purity and shine. Glass products in Romania are not just great looking, they are also being produced to suit a host of lifestyles, from the traditional to modern and the line of products are guaranteed quality glassware that is both functional and decorative.Romanian mouth-blown glassware is made by highly skilled artisans. They are very creative pieces with exceptional quality. They are also a prized collector's item. Some of the work includes vases and bowls that are made as centerpieces as well as plates - the artisans who create these masterpieces learned their skills in Murano itself. When it comes to Romanian glassware, each piece is distinctly unique. Each of the mouth-blown glassware may be described as an individual masterpiece in itself. They are exceptionally colorful, creative and elegant. Some of the works made by glass artisans in Romania are the most sought after pieces of contemporary art and have been on display in several galleries across the world. They are also prized as some of the top-notch pieces of glassware in the craft of modern blown glass art.The contemporary glassware is not just placed in galleries to be on display, they also make great gifts, particularly wedding gifts, and decorations especially in restaurants, businesses and hotels. They can also be used as decorations while designing your home.A Romanian glass artist and designer, Cornel Plescan now lives in the United States. - A Garden for the Entire Family A Garden for the Entire FamilyYou can have the most elaborated back yard from the entire neighborhood, but if it isn’t functional you have built it in vain. We all want to have beautiful and flourishing gardens, but when we have a family, we must also take into consideration the needs of the other members of it. Divide the space of your yard in two or three visual spaces, one for play and relaxation, one for gardening and maybe one for pets.An open space, covered by lawn is ideal for your children. Here you can install a table for open air lunches or for a romantic summer evening dinner.Do you have a fireplace? Keep a portion of your garden especially for depositing fire woods, but make sure it is at a considerable distance from the house or animals that can cause damage. How about pets? You can build for these little members of your family special spaces, in which they can play and exercise. Before you plant bushes and ornamental plants, surround the pet space. Cats and dogs tend to be attracted exactly by the things we try to keep them away from.Keep the by-passers’ eyes away from your personal life. Before planning the scenery, you must have in sight a place for the garbage cans. It wouldn’t be very nice to have a wonderful garden right next to the garbage cans. These can be efficiently hidden in some kind of surrounded space, decorated on the sides with life fence.Functionality is an important factor in your garden, so you have to think about children, little pets and family assets before you plant anything. Save a portion of the yard especially for you, in which you can plant whatever you want and leave for the others some space to breathe freely. You will find it more satisfying this way, once the whole family is happy with your garden and they might even bring their personal ideas for it. It is important that personal space is respected and that is why the garden must not be very wide, taking up all available space. Build from time to time a pathway or some benches where you can just relax and admire your work.Tag: gardening
- You Can Use Your Pottery Collection Great Uses for Your Pottery CollectionIf you are just starting to collect pottery here's a little secret that avid collectors know all too well: pottery is infinitely useful and extremely versatile. What this means is that most pottery has multiple functionality. Just make sure that there aren't certain restrictions on the pieces you purchase. Normally, pottery dealers will let you know the necessary care instructions and precautions that should be taken when you make the purchase. You will find that most pottery is dishwasher and microwave safe (depending on the glazing method-Raku pottery is not), food safe (again this depends largely on the glazing method and any paints that may have been used), safe for use in the oven, and able to hold liquid. So, you have a lot of options with most pottery pieces that go well beyond the uses for which the specific piece may have been designed to carry out. Storage. Vases and other vessels are great for holding things. They are by no means limited to flowers or fruit. Small pottery pieces are great for holding perfumes, particularly those with stoppers, or oils, and countless other small treasures you have lying around. Larger pieces of pottery are perfect for storing large amounts of food. And various medium sized pieces make excellent canisters in the kitchen for storing so many different things.Display. Of course there are many pottery pieces that you will want to showcase and display but did you realize that pottery could also be used to display other items you want to show off in your home. For example, use a pottery spoon rest in the bathroom as a soap dish. It's great for displaying special hand soaps in the bathroom and will add a little splash of color to the bathroom counter top.Cooking. You may not know that pottery can withstand fairly high temperatures with grace and style. Therefore, it's an excellent choice for cooking. Use pottery in the microwave and the oven, though never on the stove top for preparing and serving all kinds of dishes. If you are wary about using these beautiful pieces for cooking, they can make excellent choices for serving food. Dining. Stoneware is a very popular style of casual dinnerware these days and with good reason. Not only is it a beautiful addition to any table but it is also quite versatile. You may also find mugs, plates, and bowls that are thrown or hand built for your dining pleasure. Regardless, most tables are greatly enhanced by the addition of pottery rather than many other choices on the market today. There are so many thingsyou can do with your pottery, so don't miss out on much of the versatility that many find the primary incentive for investing in pottery for the home. Pottery is a beautiful addition to any home, so don't hide it away but use it fully and regularly in order to enjoy the true value of the pieces and get your money's worth. The true value in pottery is in how much it enhances your life; it won't enhance your life very much if kept locked away in the kitchen cabinets!Tag: pottery collection uses
- Six Popular Collectables It's never too late to start a collection. Some people start collecting when they are young - baseball cards, stamps, coins, or other items. Others may start later in life. Whatever you collect, make it something that you love.Personally, I love to collect various rocks, crystals, or seashells when I travel. Someone else I know collects porcelain figures. There are so many things to collect, and many of them can net you a good profit a few years later. We've all heard about people who made a fortune from one stamp or a baseball card. If you have collectables that are suitable, make a nice display in one or more rooms of your home. Family photo collections make beautiful displays. I know one woman who has at least 50 family photos, all in sterling silver frames arranged on top of her grand piano in the living room. The ebony grand piano makes a lovely backdrop for all of the various shaped sterling frames, and she can enjoy seeing her children and grandchildren everyday.Another friend of mine has a collection of Lladro porcelain from Spain. She displays them tastefully in groupings around her home. Art glass is also a highly sought after collectible, and welcome decorative pieces for the home. Here are six items that make popular collections:Cookbooks or travel booksKitchen gadgets - vintage Photos - family, travel, pets...Art GlassFigurines Linens and pillows (of the same type or vintage) If there is something you love, start a collection now to enjoy for years to come.

- Choice magazine finds energy-use issues with some LG refrigerators Choice magazine finds energy-use issues with some LG refrigerators Like Choice, we've seen energy-use discrepancies. In "LG's Uncool Claims," Choice magazine, Australia's version of Consumer Reports, details some energy-use issues with the LG GC-L197NFS side-by-side refrigerator and the similar GC-P197WFS:"LG claims the fridge's annual energy consumption is 738kWh, but our testing shows it actually uses considerably more when it bypasses a special 'energy-saving mode,'" reports Choice about the LG GC-L197NFS side-by-side. "LG knows circumvention modes such as these do not comply with the relevant testing standard . . . yet this popular fridge and the similar GC-P197WFS model still somehow 'slipped through the net' and were released and sold. The company is now offering an energy label rebate of $331.20 (the cost of extra energy use @20 cents/kWh over 12 years) to compensate consumers who purchased an affected model."For some LG and LG-made refrigerators, Consumer Reports has also seen discrepancies between the energy use (in kilowatt hours of electricity) indicated on the EnergyGuide labels and the measurements we get from our own energy testing, which is different from and tougher than the U.S. Department of Energy-mandated energy-use testing procedure for refrigerators. For more details on our findings, read our October 2008 investigative report "Energy Star Has Lost Some Luster." In November 2008, the Energy Department announced that several LG and LG-made Kenmore refrigerators were no longer part of the Energy Star program. At that time, we reported that owners of affected models would receive a free modification of the refrigerator to boost its energy efficiency and money from LG to cover the difference between expected and actual operating costs.A year later, LG filed a complaint claiming that the Energy Department has taken unilateral measures against the manufacturer and that the agency should pursue an industry-wide approach to new testing standards for refrigerators., but in January, the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., upheld the Energy Department's decision to remove the Energy Star from 10 LG models (LFX21975ST, LFX25975SB, LFX25975ST, LFX25975SW, LFX28977SB, LFX28977ST, LFX28977SW, LMX25985SB, LMX25985ST, LMX25985SW) and 10 LG-made Kenmore models (79732, 79733, 79737, 79752, 79753, 79754, 79757, 79782, 79783, 79789).Energy-use discrepancies for fridges aren't limited to LG, as you can read in our May 2010 report on refrigerators, which will be on ConsumerReports.org and newsstands in early April.—Daniel DiClerico and Steven H. - By the Numbers: Washing machines head up the class for smart appliances By the Numbers: Washing machines head up the class for smart appliances $5.46 billion Projected U.S. sales of smart appliances by 2015, according to "Smart Appliance Report 2010," from Zpryme Research & Consulting. In 2008, annual revenue for the entire U.S. appliance industry was about $22 billion.Washing machines are expected to post the greatest intelligence gains, accounting for 19.2 percent of smart-appliance sales by 2015. Smart refrigerators and dryers are projected to grab 17.4 and 17.3 percent of the market, respectively. It makes sense that washing machines will lead the way for smart appliances, which among other high-tech capabilities can make cost-saving adjustments by receiving price signals from utilities. Since washers are in use only some of the time, they can better take advantage of lower electricity rates from demand-response pricing. Large appliance manufacturers are leading the smart-appliance revolution, according to Zpryme. See our 2010 International Builders' Show coverage of General Electric's (watch video above) and Whirlpool's smart appliances. The consulting firm also suggests that in order for smart appliances to move mainstream, small and midsize companies will have to enter the smart-appliance market, fostering competition and lower prices.—Daniel DiClericoEssential information: If you're looking to save on appliances now, use our free buyer's guides to appliances to find the most efficient, highest-value models. - PaintRemedy iPhone app helps you identify paint problems at the source PaintRemedy iPhone app helps you identify paint problems at the source PaintRemedy can help you avoid painting problems. A key step to achieving a good-looking, long-lasting paint job is choosing quality paint. Our latest report on interior paints and review of exterior paints (ratings of interior paints and exterior finishes available to subscribers) will help you find the right finish.Proper surface preparation is another essential part of any painting project. But to do the job right, you've got to know how to handle any problems on the surfaces you're painting, such as walls covered with peeling paint or a bathroom ceiling dotted with mild and mildew. PaintRemedy, a free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch (and presumably for the highly anticipated iPad) developed by the Paint Quality Institute, part of Dow Chemical Company, can help you identify and deal with those problems. With PaintRemedy, you scroll through dozens of images of surface problems until you find the one that matches yours. The app provides you with information on possible causes and suggests solutions. For instance, if your issue is black spots on a bathroom wall, PaintRemedy will tell you that the likely culprit is mildew and that a bleach solution is its best combatant. Or if you're planning to paint an exterior stone wall covered with crusty, white salt deposit, you'll learn from PaintRemedy that efflorescence/mottling (shown) is the issue, that excessive moisture is a likely culprit, and that roof and gutter repair are likely part of the fix. You can get the same information using the problem solver on the Paint Quality Institute's Web site, though holding your laptop or computer monitor up to the wall to make a match could be a bit of a hassle.—Daniel DiClericoEssential information: Check out other home-improvement apps, and visit our Home Remodeling & Improvement Guide for information on a variety of projects. - By the Numbers: Environmental impact of food waste in America By the Numbers: Environmental impact of food waste in America 40 percent Don't let it go to waste. Estimated amount of edible food wasted in this country along the supply chain. Among other issues it creates, that waste has a negative impact on the environment, according to a recent National Institutes of Health study, "The Progressive Increase of Food Waste in America and Its Environmental Impact."More than 25 percent of the nation's total freshwater supply goes to growing food that's ultimately wasted, and about 300 million barrels of oil annually are spent processing and transporting food that gets wasted, according to study estimates, which also notes that landfills with rotting food emit substantial quantities of methane. That wasted food is not only bad for the environment but it will also cost you money. To cut down on the amount of food you throw out:• Store food properly. Check out our report on the best food-storage bags and use our tips for storing fruits and vegetables in and out of your refrigerator and in your freezer. For more food-storage advice, download a PDF of "Keep It Fresh!" from the ShopSmart archives.• Eat leftovers promptly. FoodNetwork.com has a long list of recipes for leftovers.• Use common sense regarding dating labels on packaged food. "Sell by" indicates the last day a product should be sold but takes into account time for consumer use. For example, milk is okay for about seven days after the sell-by date. "Best if used by" is the last day an item, such as dry cereal, is at its peak. It is not a safety date. If a product has a "use by" date, follow it.You might also encourage supermarkets and restaurants in your area to participate in food-recovery programs that collect and distribute food to those in need. How do you cut down on food waste? - Late-winter storm delivers another blow to Northeast Late-winter storm delivers another blow to Northeast In the aftermath of this weekend's nor'easter—which some have likened to a hurricane without a name—many Consumer Reports staffers are pumping out their basements, dealing with fallen trees, and waiting for the power to come back on. And according to the local news in and around New York City, they're not alone in having to deal with poststorm cleanup. As we've noted in a few earlier storm-related posts—on a couple of times this winter, it's key that you know how to safely use a chain saw and properly operate a backup generator. And if your home is prone to flooding, you might want to consider installing sump pumps or a drainage system or at the very least getting yourself a wet/dry vacuum. (Better yet, keep the water out of your basement and other areas.) - Promoting Homestar plan, Obama visited Opower Promoting Homestar plan, Obama visited Opower Opower got a boost from Obama. Last November, we reported on how utilities across the country are working with Arlington, Virginia-based software company Opower to create bills that compare consumers' monthly usage to that of their neighbors and include energy-saving tips.Opower got a nice nod on March 5 when President Barack Obama visited the company's headquarters. Stumping for his administration's $6 billion proposal for the Homestar initiative, the president drew a link between Opower's technology and what's been dubbed cash for caulkers."If they're getting this good information from Opower and they see that, boy, that drafty window is costing me a couple of hundred bucks a year, they're now going to have an incentive to go to Home Depots or go to Lowe's to hire a certified contractor and make the changes that will ultimately pay for themselves, improve our environment, and improve our economy," said the president, who a few months ago called home insulation "sexy."—Gian TrottaEssential information: See our Energy Saving & Green Living guide for more ways to save energy and money at home. - Forum Friday: Money- and space-saving spring remodeling Forum Friday: Money- and space-saving spring remodeling Citing increased purchases of flooring and kitchen cabinets, Lowe's recently reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings. Company shareholders probably welcome that news, a possible sign that home remodeling is picking up. At the same time, the American Institute of Architects' Home Design Trends Survey for the fourth quarter of 2009 noted that as kitchens are becoming smaller, homeowners are looking for more green products, and that "doing more with less space is now a key consideration." As we've been seeing on our kitchen-remodeling and bath-remodeling discussions, some green shoots are popping up around the subject of maximizing money and space while remodeling. Kitchen remodeling: A new discussion has arisen around specific brands of vinyl and linoleum flooring, and some people are for or against soapstone and engineered quartz countertops. If new kitchen cabinets aren't for you, these storage-extending pullout shelves and lazy-Susans can make your current cabinets more space efficient (ratings available to subscribers). Finally, the space-saving GE Advantium oven is the subject of a busy discussion in our more kitchen appliances forum.Bathroom remodeling: Green-minded readers have started a discussion on whether cork or bamboo flooring is better. - Spring ahead! Daylight-saving time starts March 14 Spring ahead! Daylight-saving time starts March 14 Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead. Throughout most of the United States, daylight-saving time (DST) will start at 2 a.m. your local time this Sunday, March 14. So be sure to spring ahead and set your clock forward one hour. Find daylight-saving time start and end dates for 2010 and beyond.Learn more about daylight-saving time and consider tackling some of the simple chores here to make your home safer and cut down on energy use (one of the reasons cited in 2005 for extending daylight-saving time):• Replace the batteries on your smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. (Do this once a year, say now at the start of daylight-saving time or, even better, at the end of daylight-saving time.) And since these devices have a limited service life, you should replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms every five year. Use our free buyer's guide to smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms to find the best models and learn how to properly install them. Ratings of smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide alarms are available to subscribers.• Check your dryer vent for buildup that can become a fire or carbon-monoxide hazard. • Reset the timers on outdoor lights to avoid wasting electricity, and replace incandescent bulbs with more-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs recommended for outdoor use. • Replace the water filter in your refrigerator if needed and check to be sure the door gasket has a tight seal.• If you haven't already, turn the temperature on your storage-tank gas water heater down to 120°F. This will save you money and lower risk of scalding injuries. (Don't do this on a storage-tank electric water heater. The lower extremity of an electric water heater can be cooler than the thermostat setting, which might make it an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.) Also consider draining your water heater.• Get your air conditioning in shape for cooling season. And if you're buying new cooling equipment, don't wait for the warm weather to arrive to schedule installation; contractors might be too busy with other jobs to get to you in a timely manner. A programmable thermostat can also help cut utility bills.• Inspect your deck and clean underneath it to determine whether you need to replace or refinish it anytime soon.—Gian Trotta Subscribe now! - What’s Cooking, Coolio? No Seriously, What’s Cooking? You might remember Coolio from his famous song, "Gangster's Paradise."Remember him from much else? Not me. He pretty much disappeared without anyone noticing. Well, I did notice the other day, so I decided to look him up. Guess what I found? Word around town is that Coolio's back as a chef. After years off the radar, he's been working on a cooking show filled with original recipes. I've watched a couple of these, and they are absolutely hilarious. The video's probably aren't what you need if you're cooking with young kids, but if you're old enough to watch PG-13 movies, then you are old enough to absolutely love these. Soul Rolls? Tricked Out Westside Tilapia? Coolio's brilliance leaves me speechless. I read in an interview that he has had a passion for cooking his whole life. Apparently he's been cooking with his mother since he was a young child. From professional rapper to professional chef: talk about a real personality. - Plan to Take Advantage of Daylight Savings & Plant Roses I recently read that March is the best time to start planting roses. Roses are a type of plant with a bare root. These types of plants grow best when the roots have time to develop into a root system before the weather is warm. By the time that spring approaches, your flowers will be ready and able to bloom. When gardening in March, especially in the cold, it is recommended that people wrap the flower roots with moss, newspaper, or plastic film before planting in colder soil. No worries if it's too cold to garden outside. Stay indoors, and plant your roses in an indoor pot or planter box. When the weather's back to warm, you can put your roses in the ground outside. Check out some tips for some tips for indoor gardening, and let Smarter help you with your shopping to garden smarter. Remember: Set your clocks forward on Sunday, March 14. - Shop Smarter: Green Budgets Save You Money When checking my email this morning, I came across this website with "going green" tips for your dorm room. It reminded me of my own personal and college experiences with "going green." While I was in school, my college's administration invested substantial time and money in keeping us green. In fact, the school sponsored several initiatives to inspire students to become environmentally conscious and energy efficient. For one campaign, a local student organization sponsored a campaign to measure energy efficiency by dorm building. A local environmental club gave us a checklist to follow in addition to energy-efficient light bulbs to get us motivated. The winning dorm received a prize. To be honest, I'm not sure what the prize actually was: my dorm was less than enthusiastic and not even close to winning. Now more than ever, businesses and schools have economic incentives to go green. In a lot of ways, green is the new black and the focal point of many public relations and marketing campaigns. Businesses have an economic incentive to go green with press opportunities. My college, Claremont McKenna College, has an outstanding PR task force that ensures that the institution receives press in widely-read publications and ranking systems. For press and PR alone, going green is worth it. Home consumers and dorm-dwellers have different needs and objectives. Like businesses, we want to get the biggest bang for our buck, but our marketing and PR objectives are different. We absolutely want to "go green" and present ourselves as environmentally conscious, but the economic incentives just aren't always there. I'm a person who plans my finances down to the last detail, and yes, I'll calculate whether an energy efficient lightbulb will actually save me money. In most situations, I do opt for the energy efficient light bulb: a few months ago, my local utility company offered incentives in the form of a cash back rebate that covered the 100% of the light bulb cost (excluding sales taxes). What's a better incentive than free? At the same time, I'm more than hesitant to buy a $20,000 hybrid when I can keep driving my hand-me-down gas guzzler that I paid off two years ago. The environment isn't motivation enough for me to commit myself to a down payment and monthly car payment when my gas is about $150 per month. My advice for going green is to start small. Set up a recycling bin and buy rechargeable batters, which will actually save you money. Sell or donate your "junk" for a tax deduction, and pay your bills online. Sell books online, ride a bike, and walk when you can. Related posts:Green Washing Machines: Save More Money! Save with Fluorescent Bulbs Going Green has Never Looked Brighter
- Do it Yourself: V-Day Cocktail Recipes Want to make a cocktail this Valentine's Day that's sure to make a splash? Try a spicy new cocktail to make it a memorable night. Cocktails are all about two things: the right liquor for you and your companion's tastes and tolerances, and the right presentation. Maybe you'll want an Agave Kiss, if you like tequila, creamy drinks, and raspberries. Or maybe a little Besame Kiss with Chambord and Lime for a fruity, delectable taste. To make either of these drinks, you're going to need highball glasses and cocktail strainers, and a few other kitchen gadgets. The preparation is all part of the presentation. Maybe if you really want to make a sensual, delicious dessert for a whole crowd, look no further than drunken fruit recipes. With five and a half pounds of your favorite fruit and two quarts of your favorite top-shelf liquor, you're sure to mix a fine dessert that will be fun to eat and even more fun to feed others! For this you're going to need a large jug and several jars to store the fruit while it soaks up the alcohol. - Best and Worst: Valentine’s Gifts for Women The worst gifts you can give a woman are gifts that seem judgmental. Remember, this is different for many women. The general things to stray away from are weight, body image, and anything that seems to draw attention to a woman's faults. Giving a woman a scale is probably the worst gift imaginable, and if you have given the special lady in your life a scale, you have to go back to step one of general care and compassion for others, and beg forgiveness immediately, if the woman is still talking to you. In this same line, giving a woman the gift of a gym membership or extra large yoga pants are less than desirable, but remember, some women would find these extremely caring and thoughtful gifts. Keep your special lady's feelings in mind before you damage them this holiday season. Good ideas for Valentine's Day gifts involve heartfelt messages and thoughtful, convenient solutions. I suggest going for the triad gift giving experience: give one sweet/ edible gift, one small heartfelt gift, and one practical, useful gift. There isn't a lack of sweets to choose from, and the heartfelt gift I can't really help you with, but the practical or useful gift I can. Think about kitchen supplies and storage, like cookware, cutlery, kitchen linens, and food storage. These gifts don't exactly scream "I love you", but they do say "I care about you and want to make your life easier, so we can spend more time together". And that's a wonderful message too. - Trendy Loveseats for Style and Comfort Which way to the loveseat could be a cute little pickup line at the local lounge or bookstore. But if you actually want a loveseat for practical reasons, there are a few style and comfort choices that you should consider. The beauty of loveseats is that they are smaller and more compact than a standard sofa or couch, which makes them easier to transport or fit in tiny rooms. Plus, they are cheaper but offer the same benefits of comfy seating. One downfall: loveseats are rarely large enough to be pull out couches. If you find a loveseat that is also convertible into a pull out bed, I recommend snatching it up, or emailing me so I can take it! Take this loveseat for example. It's cute and chic and shiny but maybe a little worn. Looks like it's been left out on the curb and easy for some trash picking. Trash picking not your style? Don't worry, there are plenty of other lessons to take from this fab photo shoot. Bright colored furniture can brighten up a room, making it feel sunny and optimistic. Dull, dirty couches are never the ones to go for, unless you have a bright carpet or wall color or are going for more of the sophisticated bachelor or bachelorette pad.
